Individualized Occupational Therapy Services

A forest trail alongside a body of water.

How It Works

Occupational therapy (OT) services through Canopy Kids start with an initial evaluation. First, you will meet with your therapist over the phone to share your concern areas. After your initial phone call, your family will set up a meeting either at a local park or in your own backyard so your OT can better understand your child's skills and needs areas. At the end of your evaluation, the OT will meet with your family to discuss the results and recommended steps forward. After your initial evaluation, your therapist will work with you to schedule treatment sessions at local parks and/or in your home.

Tailored to Your Family

During the evaluation process, we'll work with your family to create OT goals that matter to you. Want to help your child get through their morning routine without so many reminders? Want to help support them through big feelings that make it hard to get through the day? Whatever your goals, we're here to help.

The Power of Teamwork

At Canopy Kids, we know that parents and caregivers are experts in their children. We approach OT sessions collaboratively, listening to strategies you may have already tried and brainstorming together ideas about how to both build skills and add in environmental supports that will help your child thrive.

What Parent are Saying

"We are so grateful to have found Canopy Kids. I love the outdoor aspect of this program and have found our OT to be extremely responsive and proactive. My daughter has made a quick connection to her OT and looks forward to our sessions."

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question that's not listed below? Please reach us at 651-360-1662 or email megangrayot@gmail.com and we'll get back to you as soon as we can!

Because OT services are individualized, we are able to meet you where your child learns best. We offer home visits as well as the option to meet for your session in a local park within the state of Minnesota. Sessions farther than 20 miles from Saint Paul may incur an additional travel fee.

Yes! The great thing about nature-based occupational therapy is that nature (and events outside of our control such as rain and snow) helps kids develop skills like sensory processing skills, problem solving skills and flexibility. In the case of severe weather or extreme temperatures we do have access to a backup shared clinic space in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. We are also able to shift to a location with the option for indoor access, such as home visits and/or parks with warming shelters. That being said, in light rain (without lightning), hot or cold weather (within certain safety limits) we do still offer our sessions outside.

We recommend that parents attend OT sessions so that we can work with you to brainstorm solutions to challenges that come up within the context of daily routines. We find that when parents attend at least part of sessions, it's easier for kids to carry over the skills they learn in OT to other contexts. That being said, as we get to know your family we can discuss together the best situation for your particular child and family. We require all parents to be reachable immediately by phone during a session and to be able to return to the therapy location within 10 minutes in case of emergency.

Yes! In general, kids learn skills best when practicing skills in their natural environments. Having a sibling attend a session can help both your children learn what works best (and what doesn't work as well) related to maintaining emotional regulation and safety during play, building skills in play, etc. Every family is unique, and our OTs are always checking in with our families about what is working well and what could be working better. If we decide as a team that your child may do better without a sibling present, we'll work together to come up with a plan that works for everyone.

If your child had an occupational therapy evaluation within the past 6-12 months related to the goal areas you would like to work on, it may be possible to jump right into OT services with Canopy Kids. If this is the case for your family, let us know when you contact us and we'll walk you through the steps!

At this time, Canopy Kids does not accept commercial insurance plans for individualized OT services. However, we do charge significantly less than most private insurance plans per session, so depending on your specific plan's features (such as deductible, co-insurance, etc.) paying out of pocket may be a more accessible option for some families. We are able to provide superbills after services are received, which some families choose to submit to insurance carrier and/or their HSA or FSA  carrier. If you are interested in going this route, we highly recommend checking with your insurance company and/or HSA or FSA carrier to learn more about what that process is like and if your plan covers these expenses. Canopy Kids does not take responsibility for costs not covered by your insurance plan and/or HSA/FSA carrier.

Yes. Canopy Kids has and regularly reviews our safety plan to ensure that sessions are conducted safely. Any client can request a copy of the Canopy Kids Safety Plan at any time.
